It has been announced that the 24th Summer Deaflympics will now be held in same facilities of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro – RJ Brazil’s Olympic Park, from November 6th to 20th, 2022.
These changes were decided by the CBDS (Confederaco Brasilieira De Desportos De Surdos) who formally took over the responsibility for the organisation of the Deaflympics in Brazil since May 2021.
This is a decision based on the need to use the Brazilian Olympic legacy from the 2016 Olympics, for an event of this magnitude for deaf athletes from all over the world to use these official high-level facilities.
A statement from UK Deaf Sport about the announcement:
‘We were surprised to hear about this update concerning the change of date and location for 24th Deaflympic Games in 2022. We are following up through our International networks to ascertain the accuracy of this and will make sure to update our members, athletes and deaf sports in due course’.
