Active Summer Fun

New campaign promotes Active Summer Fun to deaf and disabled people

A new participation campaign created by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) in partnership with UK Deaf Sport and other Disability Sport Organisations is encouraging more deaf and disabled people to find out and play out over summer. Active Summer Fun is an exciting new campaign for 2015 that aims to support more deaf and disabled people to find ways to be active during the warmer months.

Supported by Sport England, Active Summer Fun will help deaf and disabled people to find the best information, ideal activities as well as the right people and organisations that can support you to be more active. The campaign is backed by a collection of vibrant promotion, to be used across various channels over July, August and September.

This summer is jam-packed full of activities for deaf and disabled people to enjoy. Whether wanting to take part at a local level or spectate at an international championships, the next few months are crammed with exciting opportunities. Long after the summer is over, we will all be continuing to work together to encourage more people to be active together.

No matter what the weather brings this summer, being active indoors or outdoors can be great fun. When it’s fun, we are more likely to carry on being active too.

The stark reality is that deaf and disabled people are half as likely to as active as their non-disabled people. Research shows that deaf and disabled people are unsure where to find out about activities and want to take part with their family and friends. Recent findings also showed fun to be a key motivator for deaf and disabled people to be active.

Deaf and disabled people can search through the variety of participation opportunities online, send in personal stories or ask any questions they wish to find out before playing out. The stories will share deaf and disabled people’s experiences of being active, so others can learn more from the information and make choices.

We are one of eight National Disability Sport Organisations that provide advice, support and opportunities for people with specific impairments to take part in sport and physical activity. The other are British Blind Sport, Cerebral Palsy Sport, Dwarf Sports Association UK, English Learning Disability Sport Alliance (Mencap and Special Olympics GB), LimbPower and WheelPower.

Collectively we encourage all providers, including National Governing Bodies of sport and County Sports Partnerships to get involved in Active Summer Fun. Interested providers can add their participation event on to the campaign calendar and use the promotional material in their own communications.
