A member of England Deaf Golf, Peter Baker has been voted in to become Club Captain for 2014 at Ellesmere Port Golf Club in Cheshire.  He has been a member of the club since 2001 and was vice-captain last year.  Peter has been on the club committee in recent years and has been actively involved in numerous club affairs involving competitions and greenkeeping. England Deaf Golf would like to congratulate Peter on being the first known deaf captain of a mainstream golf club in England.

Peter’s duties as Club Captain this year will involve participating in important number of competitions within the club and county as well as supporting charity golf days to raise funds for Claire House and local deaf children. He will be going to the forthcoming British Open at Royal Liverpool this July in which club captains from all over England are invited to attend by the R&A.  

Peter has been a member of England Deaf Golf for many years. He played for England Deaf Golf Team in the 2008 World Deaf Golf Championships in Perth, Australia and more recently at the 2013 European Deaf Golf Championships at Kytaja in Finland.

Peter would encourage any deaf golfers interested in taking on the role of Club Captain to join their Golf Clubs’ Committee with the aid of a Communication Support Worker or British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter.  This will increase their chances in being voted in as club captain in future.  For Peter the role of being club captain is a huge privilege and a rewarding post. This offers Peter the opportunity of becoming more involved with and become better known to the members at his golf club as well as the local community.

England Deaf Golf wishes Peter all the best for the golfing season 2014 and that it is a successful year.
