Press Release – Pledge of support for UK Deaf Sport

Pledge of support for UK Deaf Sport

Amplifon has pledged to help to fund deaf athletes through its recommend a friend scheme.

For every customer who recommends a friend, the hearing specialist will donate £30 to UK Deaf Sport if they purchase a hearing aid.

UK Deaf Sport, a charity which aims to help those with hearing loss fulfil their dreams and live happy, active lives, also supports the DeaflympicsGB, which doesn’t receive any government funding.

Executive Chair of UK Deaf Sport Piers Martin, said deaf athletes aren’t eligible to take part in the Paralympic Games so athletes compete in the Deaflympics.

“It costs an average of £2,500 to send each athlete to the Deaflympics. For DeaflympicsGB there are approximately 90 athletes attending the games in Turkey in July.

“We are incredibly grateful that Amplifon has decided to help UK Deaf Sport and the DeaflympicsGB.  Amplifon are helping athletes from all sports by reducing the amount every athlete needs to pay to compete and by helping UK Deaf Sport raise public awareness of DeaflympicsGB.

“Our aim is to reduce the cost of sending athletes for each sport to zero – matching the amount that athletes competing in the Paralympics and Olympics have to pay.”

The Deaflympics is open to profoundly deaf athletes, and have similar sports as the Olympics and Paralympics and athletes are unable to wear their hearing aids.

Giuseppe Manzo, General Manager for Amplifon UK and Eire, said: “We’re dedicated to improving hearing. DeaflympicsGB are not government funded at all, meaning our help is essential in supporting them.

“By donating £30 to UK Deaf Sport every time a person you recommend purchases a hearing aid with us, we’re helping DeaflympicGB get the medals they deserve, and inspiring others with hearing loss along the way.”

The charitable referral scheme launched this month and it is anticipated that the campaign will help to raise thousands of pounds for the charity.

Amplifon will also have donation boxes in branch, and be running additional internal events to raise money for the charity.
