Celebrating 100 years for DeaflympicsGB

At the recent Deaf Sport Personality of the Year Awards 2024 at the Glasgow Science Centre, UK Deaf Sport had the privilege to celebrate 100yrs of the Deaflympics with colleague and friends from across the deaf sporting community.

Great Britain was a founding member of the very first Deaflympics which was founded in 1924 in Paris, then known as the Silent Games.

During the weekend in Glasgow, we were able to celebrate this rich history and achievement with past and present DeaflympicsGB athletes. It truly was an honour to be among some of our best deaf athletes.

UK Deaf Sport would like to thank Sandra Campbell for her inspiring presentation and exhibition highlighting the 100 years of the Deaflympics games and the Great British Teams. The exhibition included many wonderful photographs and videos from across the decades. We hope to share them with you all soon.

We would also like to give thanks Isabelle Malaurie, former President of EDSO for her seminar on the foundation of the Silent Games in Paris in 1924.

Also, thank you to Dr Adam Kosa, President of ICSD to greet us all with high video massage of celebration.

Of the event, Nick Brookes, Chair of UK Deaf Sport said;

This was a proper celebration of Deaf sport. I would like to say thank you to Richard Weinbaum and his team for all their hard work in putting on a fantastic event. It was lovely to meet so many involved in Deaf sport, to hear their inspiring stories and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics together. It was also a wonderful opportunity for Deaf organisations to network and share ideas.

UK Deaf Sport wish to thank Deaf Sports Personality of the Year organisers and Richard Weinbaum in particular for organising such a fantastic event.
