Another nail-biting day in Tokyo for the DeaflympicsGB Team. But today was the first day they won some medals! Here’s your run down of all the action from Day 6 at the Deaflympics!
Football
The GB Men’s team were pitted against Japan in the quarter-finals today. It was always going to be a tough one against the strong Japanese team, who won Silver at the World Cup in 2023.
GB played well but the end result was 2-1 to Japan.
‘We threw everything at the game but it wasn’t to be.’ – Jamie Clarke, GB Men’s Footballer
The men’s team still have one more match, to vie for 5th place.
Tennis
Sadly, Peter Wilcox lost in his men’s singles match today. But he’ll be back in the action tomorrow for the doubles match – watch this space!
Golf
It was another good day for the third and final round of the individual golf today. The GB team all did well but didn’t quite make medal positions. Both Paul Waring and Lydia Ingman took 6th in their respective events and there is still the Team Golf event to come!
Cycling
Oliver Pritchard, along with lots of other riders, had to make a last minute bike swap upon realising how hilly the Time Trial course would be.
The Time Trial consisted of five laps of a course, with views over to Mount Fuji. Oliver was strong on the bike and very narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in 4th place.
‘I gave it all I could and I’m very proud of myself. You always question yourself but I think to come here and do what I did, I’m very, very proud.’ Oliver Pritchard
Triathlon is Oliver’s preferred event, so we think he did great competing against those who specialise in cycling.
Swimming
The moment we’d all been waiting for! DeaflympicsGB swimmers had made it to five finals today, so we really were on the edge of our seats watching.
We didn’t have to wait long as Charlotte Gower left her competitors for dust to take Gold in the Women’s 200m Medley.
Charlotte’s Gold was closely followed by a fantastic Bronze for Katy Wun in the Women’s 400m Freestyle.
A huge well done to all the athletes today and an extra Deaflympics cheer for our first GB medallists!
What’s happening next…
We’ve got more medal opportunities in the swimming tomorrow, as well as action in the Women’s Football, Double’s Tennis and Team Golf.
