On Day 9 at the Deaflympics we had action in the Women’s Football and Swimming. With only a few days left in Tokyo, would our athletes add to the medal tally?
Football
It was the turn of the Women’s Football Team to play the US in the semi-finals. Women’s football was introdcued to the Deaflympics in 2005 and the US team have won Gold at every Deaflympics since then! The GB team knew what they were up against and fought hard but couldn’t hold off the goals from the US, losing 14-0.
‘America is the best team in the world. We tried our best. Our first half was all over the palce but in the second half we fought back and played better.’ Pembe Alp, GB Women’s Footballer
There is still medal hope for the team though, as they will be going on to play Australia in the Bronze medal match on Tuesday.
‘Our next game is against Australia. I’m confident we will do the job and bring home a Bronze medal.’ Mark Gill, Head Coach GB Women’s Football Team
Swimming
There were more medal opportunities in the pool today and we caught up with Pauline Jordan-Caws, Team Leader and the Mum of athlete Lucy Jordan-Caws.
‘When a swimmer is in a final I feel like they are all my children, I’m so nervous! And when they win it’s such a rush of adrenaline.’ Pauline Jordan-Caws
Pauline’s daughter Lucy was competing in the 200m Butterfly Final today, coming 7th in a fast race.
It was medal time again for Katy Wun as she picked up Bronze in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley. That’s three medals so far for Katy and she’s in with a chance of more tomorrow!
